It addresses Lord Shiva in his fierce Rudra form. The Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, and the Atharva Veda, all contain the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra. Likewise, Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is also mentioned in the Vedas. You can use this set to help someone achieve peace as they transition, it’s very soothing if played in the background. This mantra is present in the Vedas, the four most sacred texts of Hinduism. We’ll also sing the mighty ‘Maha Mritunjaya’ mantra to Shiva, a chant that takes away our fear of death, and ‘Asato Ma Sadgamaya’ - ‘lead me from darkness into light, lead me from death to immortality. This chant reminds the soul of its basic nature. It contains several versions of the haunting Kundalini chant ‘Akal’, translated as deathless, immortal & timeless. One of our oldest & dearest Satsang members left her body this summer - the Friday after she passed we sang this set for her. The chants are specifically used in several religious traditions to help the soul rise from the heavier earth vibrations into a higher plane during the transition of leaving the body. The mantra should ideally be chanted 108 times, twice daily, at dawn and at dusk. Our set for this edition of the podcast is a bit unusual. This mantra restores health, happiness and brings calmness in the period of death. It is also called the Rudra Mantra, referring to the furious aspect of Shiva, as well as the Tryambakam Mantra, alluding to Shiva’s three eyes. It is also believed that to overcome the fear of death, Lord Shiva himself gave humanity the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra. It is said that untimely death can never occur to those who worship Shiva. It is a great death conquering mantra, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is hailed by the sages as the heart of the Rigveda. As the ripened cucumber (urvarukamiva) is liberated (bandhanan) (‘by the intervention of the farmer’) from its bondage to the creeper when it fully ripens, may He liberate us (mokshiya) from death (mrityor), for the sake of immortality (mamrritat). We worship Shiva - The three-eyed (triyambakam) Lord (yajamahe), who is fragrant (sugandhim) and nourishes (pushti) and grows (vardhanam) all beings. Urvarukamiva bandhanan mrrityormokshiya mamrritat. Om triyambakam yajamahe sugandhim pushtivardhanam,
